Goodbye California
Posted on Thursday, August 29, 2013

I have decided I am NOT moving to Los Angeles. After this whole week of musings over the perfect weather, terrible traffic, and outrageous rent rates, the negative outweighed the good and I reckoned it's best to stay in the Las Vegas suburbs.

Ideally, Las Vegas isn't a place where you want to settle in. It's the Sin City or so it's called. But what a lot of people don't realize is that real estate in this city is generously affordable! Let me give you an example: my aunt's one bedroom condo (which is not to mention, unconditionally old) is worth a quarter million dollars. For less than $175k, my parents' first house in North Las Vegas included four bedrooms, four bathrooms, three living rooms, and a giant backyard. That's a mini mansion versus a giant jail cell! Weird isn't it? To think a lot of people would actually want to pay and live in Vegas…but they don't! And to be the smartest, I think I should capitalize on that and start saving up for territory.

Question is, when the time comes, do I really want to raise kids here? Gamblers are everywhere. Not to judge (well, ok, I am…) but slot machines are everywhere. And by that I'm telling you---walmart, convenient stores, 7 elevens---they are everywhere. Drinking is tolerated leniently (overage of course, but if McLovin can avail a fake ID then my kid sure will), and the parties? Oh my…I'm a veteran. They DO NOT stop. This is dead serious.

I guess that all depends on how my parenting skills will be. Granted that I will spoil the shit out of my kid, I know I will be the perfect balance of cool mom and nazi. I've seen it when I taught preschool for a few years. But then again, those are kids younger than 5. If my teenage kid comes out of the room dressed like Miley Cyrus, I may just have a heart attack. Or if life's that good, I hope my husband-to-be is strict enough to control a wild Vegas teenager. Or two.

But I digress…here I am hatching eggs when all I really need to worry about is MYSELF. Right now. Short term goals to begin with. Figure out what this career path has to offer me, and if it's not what I need in life, I have to change it. Move on with something bigger and better. Save money and acquire myself a house and a new car. Stay in Las Vegas where all this is possible and get California out of my mind...
